An attorney has thrown unproven insinuations at the daughter of the alleged Gilgo Beach killer.
John Ray is the attorney who has represented the family of Shannan Gilbert. Whilst the alleged Gilgo Beach killer hasn’t been charged in Gilbert’s death, Ray and his team are convinced that Heuermann is responsible for Shannan’s death.
The Gilgo Beach case is a complicated one, but in brief, Rex Heuermann is accused of murdering multiple people and leaving the victims along the Long Island coast. As of writing this, the alleged victims are Jessica Taylor, Sandra Costilla, Megan Waterman, Melissa Bathelemy, Amber Lynn Costello and Maureen Brainard-Barnes. Heuermann is also a suspect in the death of Valerie Mack. All of these women were brutally attacked and left on the coast as though pieces of rubbish. It is important to say that, as of writing this, Heuermann has been charged, or suspected, but not gone to trial yet.
The disappearances and deaths of the victims have been happening for over 30 years, with the first disappearance, that we know of, reported in 1993. Sandra Costilla was last seen on 19th November 1993, her remains were found the following day.
John Ray is the representative of Shannan Gilbert’s family. Shannan was last seen on 2nd May 2010. Her remains were found on 13th December 2011. On 4th May 2012 her death was ruled as an accidental drowning. Ray states that he believes that Heuermann murdered Shannan and has been representing her family for years. His most recent public statement is possibly the most controversial yet. He spoke about the defendants family. He suggested that Heuermann’s family knew about his alleged crimes and possibly took part. Both Heuermann’s wife and daughter were subject to unfounded accusations. He said that the daughter’s internet history was full of violent adult content. That somehow, a picture of a skull on her social media showed demonic ideation. He showed a photo of the daughter claiming that her clothes were supposed to show an image of innocence (she was wearing standard baggy clothes) and then he presented an image from her social media where she is posing to the camera. Due to the angle, you can’t see what her clothes are, but she is clearly posing and is wearing dark make-up. This photo is apparently enough circumstantial evidence to insinuate that the daughter was part of these horrific crimes.
Heuermann himself hasn’t been found guilty and already this attorney is accusing the rest of the family with nothing more than 2+2=5.
The Heuermann family are victims also. They are subject to media intrusion. They may feel that they never knew the person who was the head of their family.
These accusations don’t help the families of the victims. It brings useless information into the mix. It doesn’t help the police. The accusations are so far-fetched that it almost turns the whole thing into a pantomime.
All the families deserve justice to be served in the correct and respectful manner that this case deserves.
This post has not even scratched the surface of the case. Below is a link to Law & Crime which discusses the recent statement by John Ray.

As I said previously, the attorney commented about the daughter’s clothing. In one image she is wearing a long skirt, baggy top and a backpack on her front. The attorney says that this is nothing more than her cosplaying as an innocent school girl for the media. He then compares this to another image which is stylised, looks like a Myspace photo. He says that this image is more representative of how the daughter looks. Firstly, we all have that Myspace image where we are looking moody, staring up at the camera. Assuming you’re the same age as me. Secondly, you cannot see what clothing is being worn in that image. You can see that she has dark eye make-up on.
I had to come back on to add more opinion because it’s insane that in 2024 we are still condemning women based on clothing.
I don’t want this post to take away from the horrific deaths of the victims, please don’t get it twisted. I find it hard to comprehend how a grown ass man can think that this is OK, that this kind of shit helps the investigation at all. This attorney has gone after the defendant’s wife and daughter, but not son. Whilst I have no desire for him to attack the son, it’s an interesting point that he is focusing on the female relations of the defendant. Could this be misogyny? I don’t know. Representing a woman doesn’t automatically mean that you aren’t misogynistic.
This attorney is peddling stereotypes that people have been trying to fight against for generations. This attorney, in my opinion, is turning this investigation into a circus. This case deserves more respect and integrity than what this man is showing.
